Spaced Repetition, Explained: Why You Forget Words and How to Stop

You learned 50 words on Sunday. By Friday you have nine left. That's not a discipline problem. That's your brain working exactly as designed, and there's a way to work with it instead of against it.

Your brain is a ruthless editor

Forgetting isn't a bug. Your brain constantly discards information it judges unnecessary, and its main signal for "necessary" is simple: do you keep encountering this? A word you met once in a textbook fails that test. A word you've retrieved five times over growing intervals passes it.

Researchers have mapped how memories fade over time since Hermann Ebbinghaus's experiments in the 1880s. The pattern, often called the forgetting curve, is steep: most new information decays within days if nothing interrupts the slide.

The trick: review at the moment of almost-forgetting

Here's the useful part. Each time you successfully recall something just before it fades, the memory comes back stronger and decays more slowly. The interval before the next review can stretch: one day, then three, then a week, then a month. This is spaced repetition, and it means a word can move to effectively permanent memory in a handful of well-timed reviews.

Compare that to cramming, which pours reviews into a window when you'd remember the word anyway. Same effort, a fraction of the retention. The schedule, not the total hours, does the heavy lifting.

Recall beats recognition

One more lever matters: how you review. Passively rereading a word feels productive and does little. Actively retrieving it from memory, seeing "I'll have the usual" and producing the translation yourself before checking, is what strengthens the trace. Testing yourself isn't a way to measure learning. It is the learning.

That's why a good system asks you to produce the answer, tracks whether you got it right, and uses that result to schedule the next encounter. Right answers push the word further out. Wrong answers bring it back sooner. Nothing is wasted.

Why SRS alone isn't enough

Spaced repetition tells you when to review. It says nothing about what deserves reviewing, and this is where most flashcard decks quietly fail. A perfectly scheduled deck of words you'll never use is a perfectly efficient way to memorize the irrelevant.
